Three is the first UK network to announce that it’ll be carrying Sony Ericsson’s new Xperia Ray when it’s released sometime during the third quarter. The Xperia Ray takes the tried-and-true internals of the Xperia Arc and Xperia Neo and shrinks things down even further, into a tiny 3.3-inch aluminum-framed chassis. Just like the Arc and the Neo, the Ray offers a 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, an 8-megapixel Exmor R camera and of course Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

Dropbox and Sony Ericsson have reached a partnership that will pre-install the cloud service on several upcoming Android devices.
Devices labeled as “Dropbox-powered phones” will be sold in Denmark, the UK, Sweden, Australia and Italy. We’re assuming this just means that Dropbox comes pre-installed with the devices and nothing more. And don’t worry, Dropbox will continue to work on non-”Dropbox-powered phones.”

Sony Ericsson’s Xperia PLAY is the company’s first smartphone focused on bringing serious gaming and a powerful handset to the masses. The slide-out PlayStation-style game controller is innovative and it enables you to interact with games on your smartphone in ways that just aren’t possible on a touchscreen-only device. Sony continues to be targeted in a series of cyberattacks that have resulted in the theft of personal information belonging to over 100 million Sony customers. Following breaches of the company’s PlayStation Network, Sony Online Entertainment, So-net Entertainment and most recently, the Sony’s Greek website, hackers have breached a database associated with Sony Ericsson’s Canadian online shop. Personal data including names, email addresses and passwords belonging to more than 2,000 customers was compromised, but Sony said no credit card numbers were stolen. A Lebanese hacking group called Idahca claimed responsibility for the attack, and it said the information obtained has been leaked on Facebook and Twitter. It is unclear if this latest attack is tied in any way to previous attacks on Sony’s various digital properties.

Sony Ericsson is looking to drum up excitement for their two new devices in the pipeline by holding a worldwide reviewing contest. The steps to enter are simple:

Here’s something we don’t see everyday — Vodafone New Zealand has tweeted that it’s delaying the launch of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play after a “major security breach.” According to the carrier’s official Twitter account, the shipment of Xperia Play units was stolen at some point on its way to the carrier. It’s unclear who pulled it off or how the heist took place. Vodafone has not provided any other details as to how long the launch will be delayed.

According to a report by CVG, Android Market downloads of games specifically designed to run on Sony Ericsson’s Xperia PLAY handset have been extremely low. As evidence in its case, the report hones in on five Play titles that all have under 1,000 total Market downloads: Cool Boarders 2, 100–500; Destruction Derby, 500–1,000; Jumping Flash, 50–100; MediEvil, 100–500; and Syphon Filter, 100–500. Despite this, the handset’s creator is undeterred. “There’s no concerns, it’s a revolutionary device, it’s shaking up the market, we’re very pleased with it,” said Dominic Heil-Dwyer, head of market development at Sony Ericsson. “In terms of getting the PlayStation Certified program out, generally, we’re very happy. I think we’ll make a full assessment of if it has achieved our expectations fully, further down the line, so we’re very happy.” Launched in early April, the device pairs classic gaming controls with the now familiar large-touchscreen smartphone form factor. The Xperia PLAY is scheduled to make its Stateside debut on Verizon Wireless in the coming months.
