Sony Ericsson sales, net income slide in Q3; smartphones primary focus in 2012

Sony Ericsson reported its third-quarter results on Friday and while several figures suggest the company is on the upswing quarter-over-quarter, its net income and shipments were still down compared to the same quarter in 2010. The company shipped 9.5 million devices during the quarter, up 33% from the 7.6 million it shipped last quarter but down from the 10.4 million it shipped during the third quarter last year. It attributed the decline to fewer feature phone shipments as the company continues to pivot its focus to smartphones. Sony Ericsson’s Xperia family of devices accounted for more than 80% of its sales and 22 million such devices have shipped to date. ”We will continue to invest in the smartphone market, shifting the entire portfolio to smartphones during 2012,” Sony Ericsson president and CEO Bert Nordberg said. Net income for the quarter fell €49 million from the third quarter of 2010, but increased €50 million from the second quarter. Read on for the full press release from Sony Ericsson.

Rumors of Sony’s plan to purchase Ericsson’s stake in the companies’ joint Sony Ericsson venture have come and gone over the years, but a new report claims the deed is nearly done. Sony is nearing a deal to take complete control of the cell phone vendor according to The Wall Street Journal, and analysts estimate that Ericsson’s 50% share of the JV could be worth between $1.3 billion and $1.7 billion. The report states that Sony intends to integrate the Sony Ericsson smartphone business with its tablet, gaming and computer operations in order to save on costs and create more complementary devices. Sony Ericsson reported a net loss of €50 million in the second quarter of 2011.

BlackBerry loyalty tops all other smartphone brands in U.K.

Research In Motion’s line of BlackBerry smartphones retained British customers better than any other manufacturer’s devices during the three-month period ending in July. Among BlackBerry users in the United Kingdom who purchased new smartphones during that period of time, an impressive 69.9% chose to purchase a new BlackBerry smartphone rather than stray to a new vendor. The impressive stat comes from comScore’s recent MobiLens report, and it bests Apple in the No. 2 spot with a 65.2% retention rate and distant No. 3 HTC at 48.1%. Nokia (33.5%) and Samsung (29.4%) rounded out the top-5, and Sony Ericsson trailed with 22.5% in the No. 6 spot. Hands-on with the Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray

Xperia Ray

The Xperia Ray quickly piqued our interest when it was announced a few months ago. Up to now, Sony Ericsson smartphones had invariably been constructed of plastic, and while this has its benefits, an aluminum-framed device is always going to be sturdier and feel better in the hand.
