Samsung Galaxy S II U.S. sign up page now live, for what it’s worth

Samsung Galaxy S II

Yes, after many reports of the sign-up page coming for the Samsung Galaxy S II — the sign up page for the Samsung Galaxy S II is finally here. Not that it really helps push the device along or anything like that. In fact, it just means you’ll be handing over your e-mail to Samsung so that they can e-mail at some point close to when the device is available in the U.S. But as history dictates, those emails come long after we’ve announced the availability here on the Android Central blogs. So you can sign up or, you know, just stick close to us.

35% of U.S. consumers will buy iPhone 5, study finds

A surprisingly large number of consumers in the United States plan to purchase Apple’s next-generation iPhone according to a new survey. Shopping assistant site PriceGrabber polled approximately 3,000 U.S. consumers about Apple’s upcoming iPhone 5 in early July and found that 35% of consumers intend to buy Apple’s fifth-generation iPhone. Of those who intend to purchase the Apple handset, more than half plan to do so within the smartphone’s first 12 months of availability. “Our survey data confirms the strong following Apple has built around its iPhone, with more than one-third of consumers planning to upgrade to the latest model only a little over a year following the release of the iPhone 4,” stated PriceGrabber GM Graham Jones said in a statement. The company also found that 48% of respondents claim iOS is their favorite smartphone platform while 19% said it was Android, 7% said it was “Microsoft Windows” and 6% said their favorite smartphone OS is RIM’s BlackBerry OS. PriceGrabber’s full press release follows below.

Samsung Within gets approved at the FCC, all 4 gees good to go

Samsung Galaxy S 2 for Sprint at the FCC

Android Central reader skwon09 was trolling through the FCC site, as Android geeks are wont to do, and stumbled across what’s surely the Samsung Within freshly certified with Sprint’s radios, including Wimax 4G.  With a model number of SPH-D710, and a backplate that lines up pretty perfectly with the leaked Samsung Within images we saw leaked earlier in the month, there’s little doubt that this is the Galaxy S 2 version everyone on Sprint has been waiting for.

Software patents ‘gumming up’ smartphone innovation, Google’s general counsel says

Apple, Google, HTC, Samsung, Microsoft… it’s hard to name a technology company that’s not currently involved in a patent battle with another firm. Google’s general counsel Kent Walker thinks the legal battles could actually hurt consumers and the landscape of today’s ever changing smartphone market. “The tech industry has a significant problem,” Walker said. “Software patents are kind of gumming up the works of innovation.” Google chairman Eric Schmidt recently said that his company will stand behind HTC, one of its Android partners, in an attempt to ensure it doesn’t lose an ongoing patent battle with Apple. “We have seen an explosion of Android devices entering the market and, because of our successes, competitors are responding with lawsuits as they cannot respond through innovations,” Schmidt said. According to Bloomberg, Walker said that Google is looking to purchase patents that will allow it to compete better against its rivals, such as Apple. It is unclear what acquisitions Google will pursue in an effort to bolster its patent portfolio, but there is speculation the search giant will buy Kodak’s InterDigital arm. “Each side can blow the other up on some level –everybody can block the other’s products from coming to market,” Walker said. “You create this mutually assured destruction scenario, but it’s very expensive to get all those munitions. Buying patents so you can hit the other guy, it’s not good form. You hate to unilaterally disarm here, but we haven’t in our history.” Walker said that he’s confident Google has the muscle to “balance the scales” against the likes of Microsoft and Apple.

Windows Phone ‘Mango’ released to vendors

Microsoft confirmed on its Windows Team Blog on Monday that it has released the RTM build of Windows Phone “Mango” to manufacturing partners. “This marks the point in the development process where we hand code to our handset and mobile operator partners to optimize Mango for their specific phone and network configurations,” explained Microsoft’s Windows Phone corporate vice president Terry Myerson. Microsoft has said Mango will deliver more than 500 new features to the Windows Phone platform, including Internet Explorer 9 and deeper social network integration, and we expect to see the release hit current devices in August. In addition, new phones from Microsoft’s partners, which include Nokia, HTC, LG, Samsung, Dell, Acer, Fujitsu and ZTE, are expected to be unveiled as early as September.

Samsung Galaxy S 2 may be coming to AT&T in a non qwerty version as well

Galaxy S 2 for AT&T

For those of you feeling a bit disappointed after seeing the keyboard on this morning’s Galaxy S 2 device for AT&T, cheer up — it looks like a more svelte version sans sliding keyboard is coming as well.  We had to hide a few details, but this prototype currently in testing is AT&T and Samsung Galaxy S 2 branded, running Android 2.3.4, has a WVGA display, and is “really sexy” according to our tipster.  Sounds like the Galaxy S 2 we all know and love.  It looks like there will be two awesome choices for AT&T customers soon, and that’s the way we like it.

Motorola Xoom LTE upgrade still coming, in September?

September?!?

Wanting some of the fast LTE goodness for your Motorola Xoom?  Looks like you’ll be waiting another month or so, according to a source at Droid Life.  Promised this past Spring, the LTE upgrade for the first Honeycomb tablet is a bit off the mark, taking a full seven months to reach the customer if this holds true.  To further add to the sting of waiting, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 with LTE will have been out a full month by the time this starts rolling around.  Early adopters should expect a glitch or two, but this is pushing it just a bit. Emails to current customers are supposedly going out today with all the details, be sure to let us know if you get one.  In the meantime, take heart in the fact that its coming, even if it’s not as soon as anyone had hoped.  There’s bound to be some discussion in the Xoom forums, so join in.
