Following a slew of other phones late last week, the CyanogenMod team has just added nightly build support for three new devices — Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Pro and Xperia Active, as well the LG Thrill 4G — AT&T’s version of the Optimus 3D. Nightly builds of the popular custom ROM are built every day by the team’s army of robots, giving advanced users the change to try out the very latest untested versions, bugs and all. They’re also an important milestone towards a device being fully supported by CM.

Also worth noting is the fact that these nightlies are based on the current CyanogenMod 7 release, rather than the upcoming CyanogenMod 9, so if you’re after ICS on these devices, then you’ll have to wait a little while longer. We’ve got individual device links after the jump, or alternatively you can hit the source link to see all CM7 nightly builds.

If you’ve ever wanted to build a ROM yourself from scratch and happen to love CyanogenMod, there’s a new tool that you might want to have a look at — the CyanogenMod compiler. What it does is build CM for your phone, without you having to do anything more than enter a number or two. Once you set up your computer (the instructions even cover that part), you can download a set of scripts that do all the hard work for you. When it’s all said and done, you’ll have a nice little package you can flash via recovery, and have your own home-brewed CyanogenMod.

And that might not be a good thing. What you have will be no different than the latest nightly build, except that you had to spend time doing it yourself, and won’t get any help from the CM team when things foul up. Building from scratch is fun, there’s no doubt about it, but this isn’t just a one-click rooter tool — it’s going to take a long (as in loooooooooong) time to give you something you could have just downloaded more quickly in the first place.

Anyways, if you used a one-click rooter, then flashed a recovery in one click through ROM Manager, you now have a one-click (almost) ROM builder. It does happen to be great work, and lithid did a hell of a job with it. I’m just afraid of what you guys (and gals) will break with this one. Now that I’m done with the grandfatherly advice being the old curmudgeon, hit the source link to have a look — and stay off my lawn!

This early release is based off the current CyanogenMod code, but unlike CM its components aren’t public yet, so you can not build it yourself. Since being able to roll your own is a core feature of CyanogenMod, I prefer to think of this as something close to CM, but not quite CM.

If you’re using an LG Thrill 4G, go download it now from the source link. If you’re using an Optimus 3D, you’ll need to have the Gingerbread baseband installed (unlike the previous version of Almost CM) so you’ll need to flash the current stock ROM from the LG Updater tool, then re-root your device. That sounds like a bit of a headache, and it is, but it’s well worth it as the new baseband brings along an impressive speed boost from HSPA+ networks.

This should tide us over until CM9 and Ice Cream Sandwich gets cranked out for the Cosmopolitan. Go slow, read everything, and be sure to visit the forums if you have any questions.

Everywhere you look you see Ice Cream Sandwich being ported to one phone or another. Anytime there’s a version update to AOSP, it’s fun to be an Android geek. And every time it happens, and our great community of developers start porting it over to existing phones we start seeing apps that just aren’t working well — even our favorite apps. So what to do when faced with a situation where an app you need or want badly is misbehaving? It’s a bit different situation when a build is hacked together versus an official update, like we’re seeing now with Ice Cream Sandwich. Here’s what I would recommend:

Don’t use the report to developer feature from the force close dialog if you see one. There’s a good chance the app isn’t working because of something the developer has no control over, and just an app report is going to confuse the situation. Take a moment and find the contact information for the developer, and send them an e-mail telling them what is happening, what software you’re using, and if you’re able, send a logcat of the event. Also let the ROM developer know there’s an issue, but don’t expect he or she to be able to do much about it. In fact, don’t expect the application developer to be able to fix the issue either — things like hacked video drivers or other binary bits we need and don’t have can lead to unsolvable problems.

The important thing to remember, and I’ll quote our own ICS ROM developer Beezy:

For now, just sit back and relax. Enjoy what you can do now, and wait for everything we need from Google and the manufacturer. Try a different app that does the same thing.

I’ll also add that you don’t have to use ICS just because it’s available. Give it a try when you can, and if it doesn’t work out for you flash back. Remember — this is supposed to be fun.

HTC has released kernel sources for the Rezound, Explorer, and the EVO Shift 4G update for developers to have a play with. In addition, they have let loose the full Desire Gingerbread update for developers and users alike. The kernel source won’t be as useful to the average user as it will be for folks who hack away at building their own kernels and custom ROMs, but in the end it’s us users who get the most benefit — we all know custom builds rock.

HTC didn’t stop at kernel source though. They have also released the full HTC Desire 2.3 update, making it available for download and flashing. If you remember, the Gingerbread build for the Desire had to get pretty stripped down in order to fit everything into the 512MB of ROM space. Originally HTC had stated that they wouldn’t be updating the Desire, but that didn’t go over very well with users.

If you’re looking for any of these goodies, hit the source link where you’ll find a handy list of downloads.

The HTC Thunderbolt has been quite a doozy for developers, we saw it take quite a while for the CyanogenMod team to get working data and unfortunately it seems all developers are facing the same issues. Getting the 3G / 4G LTE to work on custom ROM’s has not been an easy task, but that hasn’t stopped anyone from trying.

XDA forums member DroidVicious has been hard at work ironing out the kinks of his MIUI port for the HTC Thunderbolt, and the only thing non-functional at this point is the data, and SMS which he believes will resolve itself once the data is fixed. Sure, this does mean it is not yet ready for everyday use, but it is a step closer to more choices for Thunderbolt owners. If you are feeling brave, or have a few hours to spare that you don’t need data connectivity, give it a shot!

HTC has made the Gingerbread kernel source for the EVO Shift 4G, HTC Thunderbolt, and Droid Incredible available for download on their developer center website. As always, unless you’re a kernel developer or ROM chef, this won’t do too much for you — other than build anticipation for the awesome new flashables that will be coming soon for these three.

As we explained yesterday, now that the Ice Cream Sandwich SDK has been released, we’re about to see a deluge of SDK-based ROM ports. We’re not going to cover them all here, but will will cover the first to come out of the Android Central Forums. Beezy’s been hard at work, and you’ll soon be able to enjoy the fruits of his SDK labor on the Nexus S 4G. Things are very much still a work in progress, but you’ll soon be able to be the first on your block to say you have some form of ICS on your phone.
