Custom ROMs are awesome currently but I still want to see that official OTA for the NS4G….
Google on Friday announced that it has begun to push out an update that will bring Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich to its Nexus S smartphone. “We’re rolling out Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, to GSM/UMTS Nexus S devices over the coming month, starting today,” Google’s Android team wrote in a post on Google+. The Ice Cream Sandwich update is available over the air (OTA) for GSM Nexus S handsets and while the roll-out will begin today, Google indicated that it could take as long as a month to complete. The company did not indicate when Android 4.0 might become available for Sprint’s Nexus S 4G.

Samsung Nexus S 4G hacker Beezy has done it again, this time porting the Android 4.0.3 OTA update for T-Mobile phones to the Sprint 4G version. There’s no Wimax of course, but for the most part everything is working well — including GPU rendering that we all have been wanting. Hopefully the real OTA for the Nexus S 4G is coming soon, and we can’t wait to see what the fellas can do with it when it comes out, but for now you can enjoy the very latest version of Android as it should be on your phone with this ClockworkMod flashable version.

So Android 4.0.2′s starting to roll out to the GSM version of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. But maybe you don’t want to wait? (We sure don’t.) Here’s how to easily flash the update to your phone, same as we did for the volume bug update. Note that this won’t erase anything, and it’s really no different than if you sat back and waited.

It’s not Ice Cream Sandwich.

T-Mobile and LG have announced that the Gingerbread update for the T-Mobile G2X is once again rolling out, after a couple of failed attempts. At first you had to use the LG desktop software to install it, then we saw a limited OTA which was halted, and now we see another OTA. Hopefully, all the issues are ironed out and all of us who bought one of these can enjoy a more current OS. If you’re impatient and don;t want to wait for the OTA, you can manually apply the update via the LG updater tool — hit the links below for more info. As one of the best built Android phones ever, with the great Tegra 2 game heavy chipset, we’re happy to see it with almost current software. Now bring on the Ice Cream Sandwich!

Half way through the week, still no official Galaxy Nexus announcement from Verizon and we’re already seeing and OTA for the device. No matter — it’s coming. Until then, make sure you hop on back and check out some of the news you may have missed and be sure to check out the Android Central forums as well.

If you’re rocking the new LTE Samsung Skyrocket on AT&T, you might want to check for an OTA update. An OTA to Android 2.3.6 is pushing out now, and we manually checked on our review unit (Menu>Settings>Software update>Check for updates) and sure enough, one was waiting. We’re not quite sure what was changed here — we know that 2.3.6 addressed a bug in Google voice search, but we imagine Samsung and AT&T packaged a bit more into this one. We’re not seeing anything listed at the usual locations, so we’ve reached out to AT&T and Samsung for an answer. In the meantime, updates are always fun and make our inner Android geek feel good, so grab yours and we’ll sort it out in the forums.
