Sprint issues security fix for HTC phones

Sprint on Tuesday confirmed that it has released an over-the-air security update for several HTC smartphones. In a statement posted to Sprint’s community forum by company spokesman Mark Elliot, Sprint said HTC smartphones including the HTC EVO 4G, HTC EVO 3D, HTC EVO Shift 4G, HTC EVO Design 4G, HTC EVO View 4G and HTC Wildfire S will all begin receiving the update this evening. “Sprint worked closely with HTC after reports emerged of a potential issue that could allow malicious third-party apps to compromise data on Android devices made by HTC,” the statement said, noting that users of the aforementioned smartphone models should install the update promptly. Apple granted patent on slide to unlock, even though it existed 2 years before they invented it

Slide to unlock

The software patent system is totally askew.  We need to look no further to see this than the recent news that Apple was granted a patent on sliding to unlock a mobile device.  It’s bad enough that a governing body somewhere actually believes that you or I aren’t smart enough to come to the natural conclusion on our own (that’s basically what a patent means — it’s a unique idea or process), but the fact that it existed on an old Windows CE device in 2005 was totally overlooked.

Sprint OTA update for all current HTC Android phones now available, fixes data storage privacy issue

HTC Androids

Sprint has announced that an OTA (over the air) update is now available for all current HTC Android phones on their network, specifically the HTC EVO 4G, the HTC EVO Shift 4G, the HTC View 4G, the HTC EVO 3D, the  HTC EVO Design 4G, and the HTC Wildfire S.  They say they worked closely with HTC after news of the data mishandling by HTC phones was brought to light, and now offer a solution for all affected phones.  Like every OTA, they will be going out in waves — if you don’t get it today, you will shortly.  To manually check for the update, go to Settings >System updates > HTC software update > Check Now, and if the update is available for you it will begin the download and installation process.

HTC laying down some Beats (Audio) on Nov. 3

HTC Event

Hmmmm. What have we here? Looks like HTC’s having a little get-together on Nov. 3 in New York City, and Beats Audio’s invited. (As were we, of course.) There’s a strong possibility we’ll be seeing the Verizon HTC Rezound (aka the Vigor), though nothing’s official yet. We’ll see next week!

HTC Amaze 4G gets a one-click root option, permanent for unlocked bootloaders

Amaze 4G

Developers have worked out a one-click root option for the HTC Amaze 4G, that provides a temporary root option if you have a locked bootloader, or a perm-a-root if you’ve managed to get the bootloader unlocked.  While many (yours truly) aren’t a fan of one click solutions, I know a lot of you guys love them, and as long as you’re careful you don’t need folks like me giving you guff.
