Leading smartphone vendor HTC on Wednesday trimmed its fourth-quarter revenue forecast by roughly 23% as stiff competition from Samsung and Apple has seeming slowed sales. The Taiwan-based company became the No.1 smartphone vendor in the U.S. by shipment volume last quarter, but a six-month string of record revenue came to an end in October following the release of Apple’s highly anticipated iPhone 4S. In light of the new iPhone and Samsung’s recent success in the smartphone space, HTC lowered its fourth-quarter revenue forecast to NT$104 billion from its earlier guidance of between NT$125 billion and NT$135 billion. Unless things pick up, HTC’s sales will decline sequentially for the first time in two years, Bloomberg reports. HTC said it will also reevaluate its $300 million acquisition of S3 Graphics following news that it lost a patent-infringement case against Apple earlier this week.

HTC has released kernel sources for the Rezound, Explorer, and the EVO Shift 4G update for developers to have a play with. In addition, they have let loose the full Desire Gingerbread update for developers and users alike. The kernel source won’t be as useful to the average user as it will be for folks who hack away at building their own kernels and custom ROMs, but in the end it’s us users who get the most benefit — we all know custom builds rock.

A few days ago we were introduced to the Tegra 3-powered HTC Edge, rumored to be one of the first quad-core Android smartphones. Today sees the emergence of renders of another rumored quad-core HTC phone, the “HTC Zeta”. Accordig to Engadget, the Zeta’s striking design isn’t the only remarkable thing about the device, as it reportedly packs a quad-core Qualcomm APQ8064 CPU at a whopping 2.5 GHz.

The second of Verizon’s year-end smarpthone troika — the HTC Rezound — is officially available today. It’ll run you $299 with a two-year contract. And for all that scratch, you get a 4.3-inch phone with a new 720p display — as in 720 pixels packed into the short axis — along with Android 2.3 and Sense 3.5. It’s sporting a 1.5GHz processor to push those pixels, and an 8MP camera full of HTC’s newfound photographic goodness. It’s also got Beats Audio (and comes with a snazzy pair of earbuds), if you’re into that sort of thing.
We just received our HTC Rezound review unit, and although we spent a few moments with the device at HTC’s announcement in New York City, we have some more thoughts on the 4G LTE smartphone after using it for the morning. For starters, while the phone isn’t nearly as thin as other 4G LTE devices like the Motorola DROID RAZR or Samsung Galaxy Nexus, it’s a completely different animal than the HTC Thunderbolt. It fits nicely in your hand, and it feels good to use and hold. The 4.3-inch 720p HD display is absolutely beautiful. In fact, it’s probably the best display on any mobile device we’ve ever seen besides the iPhone’s Retina Display. It’s so good that there are elements in HTC’s Sense interface that aren’t high quality enough for the display, but we’ll touch on that more in our review. The included Beats headphones are decent and offer very good audio reproduction, and the HTC Rezound has taken everything we’ve thrown at it and powered through without a hiccup — this device is fast. We have hands-on photos in the gallery below, so make sure to check those out while we work on our full review.

Chinese company Huawei is the latest to find itself on the end of a chase from Microsoft over royalty payments from its Android products.
They confirmed on Monday that “negotiations are in progress” over licensing the patents Microsoft claims Android infringes upon. Victor Xu, Chief Marketing Officer for Huawei said of the news, ”We always respect the intellectual property of companies. But we have 65000 patents worldwide too. We have enough to protect our interests. We are a very important stakeholder in Android.”

HTC may launch a new tablet next year that it hopes will be distinct in a growing sea of Android tablets, Reuters recently reported. HTC already has a number of Android-powered tablets on the market including the 7-inch Flyer (EVO View 4G on Sprint) and the AT&T Jetstream 4G. “The tablet is a market we would like to try and test, to see whether we can make ourselves stand out and prevent a me-too product,” HTC CEO Peter Chou said in a recent media briefing. The company could make itself stand-out a bit by being the first to market with an Ice Cream Sandwich device, possibly pre-loaded with HTC’s unique Sense UI. Its Flyer Android tablet was loaded with HTC’s Sense user interface but it launched with an earlier version of Android that was designed for smartphones, not tablets. Chou was not specific on when the new tablet might make its debut.
HTC has been on a tear this year, registering month after month of record revenue thanks to strong demand for its Android-powered smartphones. The Taiwan-based vendor saw six straight months of record revenue until October, when it recorded revenue of NT$44.11 billion, a 2.8% dip compared to September. Revenue was up 36% over October 2010, however. Apple’s iPhone 4S sold more than 4 million units during its launch weekend alone following the device’s release on October 14th, and while the new Apple smartphone may have had some impact on sales of HTC phones, the company had already issued light fourth-quarter guidance during its third-quarter earnings report. HTC clarified on Monday that fourth-quarter sales would grow between 20% and 30% compared to the same quarter last year, but would decline from the NT$135.8 billion reported last quarter.

For those of you who ever doubted just how fast the smartphone industry moves, here’s a glimpse at the “next best thing”: The HTC Edge appears to be one of the first quad-core smartphones heading to the U.S. The ladies and gentlemen over at pocketnow got their hands on the first render of the device, which shows a 4.7-inch megadisplay with 720p resolution atop four (yes four) 1.5 GHz cores of Tegra 3 goodness and 1GB RAM. You’ve also got an 8MP camera with HTC’s new 28-millimeter, f/2.2 lens technology. Now there are still a lot of holes: Carrier? Release date? LTE? And the four capacitve buttons pictured above hint at Gingerbread, but will that eventually be updated to Ice Cream Sandwich? Sit tight, this one’s still a way’s away, but it’s always good to watch the horizon.
