Judge finds HTC guilty of infringing two Apple patents; could mean trouble for Android [updated]

A judge with the U.S. International Trade Commission on Friday ruled that HTC’s Android phones infringe on two of ten Apple patents covered in a complaint filed by the Cupertino-based company last year. “We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We’ve decided to do something about it,” Apple CEO Steve Jobs said in a statement at that time. “We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours.” The ITC’s decision is an initial determination however, and it will now need to be reviewed by a six-member Commission. Apple’s complaint in this case covered a total of ten patents, and the two HTC has been determined to be infringing are numbered 5,946,647 and 6,343,263. These patents cover a “system and method for performing an action on a structure in computer-generated data,” and a “real-time signal processing system for serially transmitted data,” respectively. Both patents are said to be hugely important to the core Android OS, and if upheld, the ruling could be incredibly damaging to the rest of Google’s Android partners. Apple is also in the process of suing Motorola and other Android partners for infringing on these and other patents. HTC has already stated that it plans to appeal the ITC’s determination, telling reporters it will “vigorously fight” the ruling. A final determination in the case is due on December 6th, 2011.

Hands-on with wireless charging for the HTC ThunderBolt with the Energizer Inductive Charging Pad

ThunderBolt Energizer Qi Charger

If you’ve got an HTC ThunderBolt on Verizon, chances are you spend a lot of time charging the thing. I will never again be plugging in my ThunderBolt, however. Picked up Verizon’s wireless charging battery cover for it recently and paired it up with an inductive charging pad — it uses that newfangled Qi charging system — and couldn’t be happier.

Analysts predict quarterly gains for Apple, Samsung, and HTC

Apple, Samsung, and HTC will each post gains in their respective earnings reports according to 46 analysts polled by Reuters. “We expect second quarter earnings to reveal a widening gulf between the winners and losers and further illustrate the ‘changing of the guard’ as Apple, HTC and Samsung continue to increase market share,” CCS Insight analyst Geoff Blaber told the news outlet. Analysts say Samsung’s growth, which pushed it past Nokia as the largest smartphone builder in the world, was fueled by Google’s Android operating system. The group also collectively predicts that Apple sold 16.9 million iPhones during the fiscal third quarter. That figure is down from the fiscal second quarter of this year, but it’s also twice as many devices as Apple sold during the same quarter last year. Similarly, Samsung is expected to report that it shipped 19 million smartphones during the quarter and analysts believe the Korean company is on pace to surpass its 60 million unit sales target for the year. Nokia will continue to struggle, although we hope it picks up momentum when its Windows Phone devices begin launching later this year. “There were few products in the market that can match Galaxy S II as Apple appears to be delaying new iPhone debut due to disruptions in parts supply, while Nokia continues to fail to introduce competitive lineup,” Jin Sung-hye, a Hyundai Securities analyst, said.

T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide launches July 27th for $199.99

It was hardly a surprise when T-Mobile announced the HTC-built myTouch 4G Slide late last month, as a series of leaks left little to the imagination. Noticeably absent from T-Mobile’s official announcement, however, were launch details. T-Mobile on Monday rectified the situation when it revealed that the latest addition to the myTouch series will launch on July 27th for $199.99 on contract. The T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide is no slouch when it comes to specs — the smartphone features a dual-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor, a 3.7-inch WVGA display, an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p video recording, and a full QWERTY keyboard along with support for SWYPE. The myTouch 4G Slide also features HTC’s latest Sense 3.0 UI overlay and service suite on top of Android 2.3 Gingerbread, which is far and away our favorite Android overlay to date.

T-Mobile MyTouch 4G Slide coming July 27, pre-order starts July 19

MyTouch 4G Slide

The T-Mobile MyTouch 4G Slide (the one with the awesome camera) will be hitting the shelves come July 27, with a pre-sales campaign starting July 19.  The new slider is a very nice upgrade from the original MyTouch 4G, or the MyTouch 3G Slide, with a dual-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon, Android 2.3 with Sense 3.0, and a 3.7 inch WVGA LCD screen.  But the real standout looks to be the camera — HTC promises zero shutter lag on the 8MP camera, with a backside illuminated sensor and an f/2.2 aperture.  Add in some great supporting software, complete with HDR capabilities, and it sounds like a winner.

Editorial: The EVO 3D shows how updates should be done

EVO 3D OTA

Yes, I said it.  You don’t have to be a fan of HTC’s products to realize they (and Sprint as well, we suppose) have figured out how to send out updates.  We’re not talking the quality of the update here, so simmer down everyone unhappy with their Thunderbolt or EVO 4G after the latest software updates.  Nor are we speaking of the timeliness (or lack thereof) of updates.  Just the methods.  When HTC realized one of their system updates borked the Sense 3.0 lockscreen on the EVO 3D, they simply updated the app themselves, and sent it out to users without getting carriers or anyone else involved.  Same thing they did when they noticed HTC Watch needed a little fixing up.  This is how a manufacturer should handle updates to their own code — focus on the bug and kill it in-house, then send that sucker out to the users ASAP, over-the-air, with little fanfare or fuss.

ThunderBolt update brings a slightly easier way to turn off LTE

ThunderBolt network mode

Here’s an unexpected little treat that’s come out of the latest update to the HTC ThunderBolt. Somebody (not sure if it was Verizon or HTC) finally decided it’d be a good idea to give us a way to turn off LTE if we so feel like it. All you have to do is go to Settings>Wireless and Networks>Mobile networks>Network mode, you’ll get the option to set your preferred network to LTE/CDMA (ie 3G/4G, which is on by default), or CDMA (1xRTT/3G) only.
