Software patents ‘gumming up’ smartphone innovation, Google’s general counsel says

Apple, Google, HTC, Samsung, Microsoft… it’s hard to name a technology company that’s not currently involved in a patent battle with another firm. Google’s general counsel Kent Walker thinks the legal battles could actually hurt consumers and the landscape of today’s ever changing smartphone market. “The tech industry has a significant problem,” Walker said. “Software patents are kind of gumming up the works of innovation.” Google chairman Eric Schmidt recently said that his company will stand behind HTC, one of its Android partners, in an attempt to ensure it doesn’t lose an ongoing patent battle with Apple. “We have seen an explosion of Android devices entering the market and, because of our successes, competitors are responding with lawsuits as they cannot respond through innovations,” Schmidt said. According to Bloomberg, Walker said that Google is looking to purchase patents that will allow it to compete better against its rivals, such as Apple. It is unclear what acquisitions Google will pursue in an effort to bolster its patent portfolio, but there is speculation the search giant will buy Kodak’s InterDigital arm. “Each side can blow the other up on some level –everybody can block the other’s products from coming to market,” Walker said. “You create this mutually assured destruction scenario, but it’s very expensive to get all those munitions. Buying patents so you can hit the other guy, it’s not good form. You hate to unilaterally disarm here, but we haven’t in our history.” Walker said that he’s confident Google has the muscle to “balance the scales” against the likes of Microsoft and Apple.

Virgin Mobile Canada HTC Sensation OTA update coming July 25

HTC Sensation

The HTC Sensation kicked things off fairly well, but HTC is aware there are still some bugs in the software. In an effort to correct them they’ve been rolling out small updates to carriers who have taken on the device. Virgin Mobile Canada is next in line — as noted on their Facebook page an update to correct a booting issue with the device is coming as of July 25. Nice to see an update pushed out quickly.

Desire with Gingerbread

Good news for HTC Desire owners on British network Three — the carrier has confirmed today that it’ll be pushing out the official Gingerbread update for the popular handset as soon as it’s made available by HTC. No waiting around for network testing or the addition of carrier-mandated bloatware, instead Three-branded Desires will get the update at the same time as unbranded phones. In a post on its official Twitter account, a Three rep said –

T-Mobile MyTouch 4G Slide now available online

T-Mobile MyTouch 4G Slide

If you want to get your hands on T-Mobile’s MyTouch 4G Slide, and don’t want to wait for it to show up in stores on July 27, you can now place your order at T-Mobile website.  The MyTouch 4G Slide (check out the initial review) is HTC’s latest tech, thrown into a package with a horizontal sliding qwerty, and one heck of a camera.  It will cost you $200 after contract and a pesky mail-in rebate, or $500 if you want to buy it outright.  My first impressions tell me that it’s a great update from the original MyTouch slider, or even the MyTouch 4G.  We’ve got an ongoing Q&A thread in the forums, and I’ll have a full detailed review shortly.  If you’re ready to buy, hit the source link and have at it!

HTC Wildfire S mini-review (Vodafone network)

HTC Wildfire S

One fortunate side-effect of all the craziness going on at the expensive end of the smartphone spectrum is that more-affordable devices are starting to become faster and better. Last year’s HTC Wildfire underwhelmed us a little, with its sub-par QVGA screen and relatively meager 384MB of RAM. But earlier this year HTC refreshed many of its mid-range products, and it’s arguably the Wildfire that’s received the biggest boost. The new HTC Wildfire S has a sharper, brighter screen, a faster CPU and more RAM than the original. And like the rest of HTC’s “S” series, it ships with Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

HTC Flyer getting a 3D makeover?

HTC Flyer 3D cameras

So this thing hit our inbox, and Jerry and I are going back and forth on how much of a Photoshop job it might be. At first glance, you have what appears to be the upper housing of the HTC Flyer tablet, with 3D cameras and a new speaker grille. Chinese site 175wan, where the picture originated, opines that it’s a second-generation Flyer, and that could be. Everybody and their mother’s doing 3D these days.

HTC Puccini tablet goes through the FCC

HTC Puccini tablet

If you’ve been dying for a blueprint-esque look at HTC’s upcoming 10-inch “Puccini” (that’s a code name) Android tablet, look no further than the FCC, which has taking the HTC Puccini for a spin. Most of us can’t tell too much from this line drawing (at least it doesn’t appear to have dual 3D cameras), but the FCC’s testing does out 850MHz and 1900MHz radios, which seems to imply that we could possibly see this guy on AT&T at some point. And it’s also got an LTE radio to boot, which lends credence to the idea that this could roll out along with AT&T’s true 4G network (enhanced backhaul be damned!) later this year. On the other hand, releasing an LTE tablet that’s only LTE in five cities — remember that AT&T plans to light up Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Atlanta and San Antonio first — makes only slightly more sense than releasing an LTE tablet that doesn’t actually have LTE.
