An Oklahoma lawmaker has proposed levying a new tax on violent video games. Oklahoma Democrat Will Fourkiller has suggested the tax be applied to all games that receive an ESRB rating, which is intended for adults only. In addition, Fourkiller thinks T-Rated games should also have a tax added to the cost of the games, since some include “simulated gambling.” But a tax on all T-Rated games would be too broad, Ars Technica points out, as there are also titles that are rated T for “cartoon violence, crude humor and suggestive themes.” Read on for more.

Games can be really fun to play on your Android device. There’s all sorts of them available, from ones for dedicated “gaming” hardware like the Xperia Play, to HD games optimized for tablets. But Android is good for a lot of things besides games. Some use their device as the web in their hands, others need a portable e-mail solution, some of us are heavy texters. Tonight, I’m curious and want to find out just how many folks out there like to game on their Androids. I know since I got an Android tablet, I find myself playing more games than I ever imagined myself playing. What say you my fellow Android fans?

The video game industry capped off a rough year in the United States with a horrible holiday month that saw sales plummet year-over-year across all categories. Market research firm The NPD Group recently released its sales estimates for December 2011 and the full year, and neither set of figures paints a pretty picture. Last month, total industry sales plummeted to $3.99 billion, down 21% from $5.07 billion in December 2010. Hardware sales dropped 28% to $1.32 billion in December, and software sales were down 14% to $2.08 billion. “December was very rough for new physical sales of video games hardware, software and accessories,” NPD analyst Anita Frazier said in a statement. “Because of the great slate of content that came to market during the fourth quarter, I had expected December sales to represent a larger portion of total year sales than what occurred. This year, December accounted for just 23% of annual sales, while the average for the past ten years has been 28.” For the full year, hardware sales were down 11% to $5.58 billion, software sales dipped 6% to $8.83 billion and total industry sales slid 8% to $17.02 billion. The NPD Group’s full press release follows below along with a list of the top-10 best-selling games of 2011.

Verizon announced the LG Spectrum here at CES, and we took some time to try it out. It’s got a nice 4.5-inch 720p display, a dual-core 1.5 GHz processor, and it’s running Android 2.3. It feels a lot like Nitro HD, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it’s not particularly new. The only real difference aside from running on Verizon instead of AT&T is that the Spectrum bumps up the RAM to 1 GB from 768 MB.
