Amazon profit falls 73% in Q3 despite record Kindle launch

Amazon reported third-quarter earnings on Tuesday, noting net sales increased 44% from the same quarter last year to $10.88 billion. That figure is on a par with Wall Street’s revenue expectations of $10.93 billion. Amazon reported EPS of $0.14, which missed the Street’s estimates of $0.24 per share. Net income fell 73% quarter-over-quarter, however. Amazon reported net income of $63 million during the third quarter, down from $231 million in the second quarter. The online retailer said September 28th was its biggest day ever for Kindle sales, including during the previous peak holiday season. “In the three weeks since launch, orders for electronic ink Kindles are double the previous launch,” Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said. “And based on what we’re seeing with Kindle Fire pre-orders, we’re increasing capacity and building millions more than we’d already planned.” Looking forward to the fourth quarter, Amazon expects net sales to fall between $16.45 billion and $18.65 billion, 27-44% growth over the fourth quarter of last year. The company also confirmed better than expected demand for its Kindle Fire tablet, noting that it is building “millions more” tablets than it had initially orders. Shares of Amazon stock fell more than 14% in after-hours trading. Read on for the full press release from Amazon.

Pierce your nipples, get a ‘free’ phone

Phone for piercing

We’ve seen these “free” phone deals before. Try on a pair of jeans, get a “free” phone. But we’re a little intrigued about the prospect of getting a “free” phone (you still have to sign a contract and, you know, pay your bill every month) in exchange for putting holes in your body. But that’s what you can get from the Piercing Pagoda, apparently. You’ve got to be 18, and be able to pass a credit check. And, you know, have a hole put in your body.

One of these EVO 3Ds is not like the other

EVO 3D camera mount

Whoopsie. Reader Nelson passes along the following story about his EVO 3D:

I just bought these phones last night at a Nebraska Furniture Mart and one of them came with the camera plate upside down. I went back to the store to exchange it, but they said that is just cosmetic and if i change it will use my one-time store exchange. I just think that is not fair.

Amazon’s Trade-In program now accepts electronics

Moments ago Amazon announced that its Trade-In program will now accept consumer electronics. That means anyone who wants to trade-in consumer electronics, along with other goods, can send a box to Amazon and receive an Amazon gift card in exchange. Amazon originally launched its trade-in program in 2009, and until now it only accepted games, text books, and movies. “We want to give customers the opportunity to get great value from their used electronics,” said Paul Ryder, vice president of electronics at Amazon. “Hundreds of thousands of customers have already received millions of dollars in gift cards from the other products in our program.  The Electronics category is a natural extension and we are delighted to offer our customers more trade-in options.” We gave the service a quick test and noticed that a 16GB black iPhone 4 on AT&T could bring in as much as $314.50. An original 30GB Microsoft Zune? Just $25. Hit the jump for the full release.

NTT Docomo’s summer lineup: 9 smartphones, 8 are Android

NTT Docomo

Japanese carrier NTT Docomo has announced its summer 2011 lineup, which includes nine smartphones — eight of which are Android.  The offerings from Sharp, NEC, LG, Samsung and Sony Ericsson are chock full of cool features that never seem to make it out of Asia, like infrared data exchange and mobile wallet.  Even more interesting is that they all will ship with Gingerbread, another feature that seems slow to make it’s way to North America.
