Apple’s iMovie mobile application has new competition when it comes to mobile video editing. Long-time digital video editing software vendor Avid has released its Avid Studio mobile video editing app for the iPad. The app is currently available in the App Store for an introductory price of $4.99 and will increase to $8 after 30 days. Avid Studio for the iPad is the company’s first video editing program for any of Apple’s platforms; Avid had previously only built Windows software. Avid Studio looks to provide most of the features offered through the desktop version, going above and beyond what iMovie is capable of in many cases. The app comes only two days after Apple released a big update for Final Cut Pro X for OS X.
Apple certainly helped shape the mobile space by popularizing multitouch screens on smartphones and tablets, but can it do the same for desktop computing, too? The United States Patent and Trademark Office on Thursday published an Apple patent application that describes a desktop computer — likely the iMac — with a touchscreen display. Dell, HP and plenty of other firms have introduced all-in-one PCs with touchscreens, of course, but Apple’s invention may make some applications more intuitive. Read on for more.

The United States Patent and Trademark Office published a patent application from Apple on Thursday that reveals potential next-generation battery designs. As the mobile industry turns toward thinner devices, Apple is looking to redesign batteries to enable these thin designs. According to PatentlyApple, the Cupertino-based company’s invention relates to a battery cell, which includes a set of electrode sheets of different dimensions that can be arranged in a variety of designs. The configuration can be based on a non-rectangular battery design such as an L-shaped, a triangular or a pyramidal design. Existing battery packs typically contain rectangular cells, and by utilizing cells with alternative shapes, Apple will seemingly be able to pack more cells into a smaller battery pack.

Photo Voyages of Trey Ratcliff, the “official” application of the popular travel photography blog Stuck in Customs is now compatible with Google TV. The app consists of hundreds of Ratcliff’s images (and they are spectacular images indeed) as an endless slideshow to view on your screen. Another interesting aside, a note in the market says an update that allows setting any of the images as your wallpaper is coming “very soon”. The app will cost you $2.99 and requires Android 2.1 or higher. Hit the break for the download link.
