Google will announce and launch its own music store this quarter, Business Insider said recently. The company revealed its Music beta service in May, which allows users to store up to 20,000 songs in the cloud, but now users will be able to purchase and download tracks, too. Google is reportedly already in negotiations with the major music labels and The New York Times recently reported that the service will launch in the “next several weeks.” Record labels, however, are worried that Google’s cloud storage option could kindle, not stifle, music piracy. “We want to make sure the locker doesn’t become a bastion of piracy,” one executive told The New York Times. If Google introduces a music store it will compete directly with third-party music apps, such as the Amazon MP3 store, on Android smartphones and tablets. Perhaps we’ll hear more on the topic during the joint Samsung/Google Ice Cream Sandwich press conference on October 18th.
A judge with the United States International Trade Commission has ruled that Apple is not infringing on four of HTC’s patents related to phone dialing and battery power management, Reuters said Monday. HTC originally filed the lawsuit in May of last year when it sought a ban on the import of Apple’s iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. The final ruling in the case will occur in February when the verdict of a full commission is revealed. Apple and HTC have been locked in a number of legal battles. Apple first sued HTC in March and a U.S. ITC judge found HTC guilty of infringing on two of Apple’s patents in July. HTC has said it will appeal that ruling.

The HTC Thunderbolt has had a rough patch when it comes to Gingerbread. Combine lots of rumors, even more leaks, and a pretty poor OTA that ended up getting yanked back and you’ll have a mix that’s bound to have Android power users up in arms. We’re not going to judge anyone here, heck we can’t judge — releasing software isn’t easy. Verizon and HTC want you to be happy, because they want you to be a return customer. To quote a great philosopher, “Shit Happens”.

Samsung has released the kernel (and other GPL software) sources for the SGH-T989, otherwise known as the T-Mobile Galaxy S II. As usual, this one’s not for the layman or even the average Android hacker to fool with, but to developers it’s like gold. Having the kernel source will allow the Galaxy S II to get rooted, and then all sorts of goodness can happen — and we can hardly wait. Nice to see Samsung keeping on track and being quick with their code releases. Hopefully, other OEM’s can take a page from their book. If you’re the type who needs a bit of T989 kernel source, hit the link and grab it.
