41% of mobile users in North America plan to buy iPhone 5, study suggests

According to research recently released by mobile ad network InMobi, 41% of mobile users in North America plan to purchase the iPhone 5. 50% of those planning to purchase the phone will buy it within the first six months after it is launched, which could propel its current 27% smartphone market share to 41%. InMobi added one caveat: if Apple decides to release a minor upgrade to the current iPhone, just 15% of consumers will purchase the new device. InMobi’s research revealed that consumers hope Apple upgrades the processing speed, screen resolution, battery life and service quality in the new device. 51% of current iPhone owners, 27% of BlackBerry owners and 52% of Android owners plan to upgrade to the iPhone 5. If Apple reveals an iPhone 4S, however, just 11% of iPhone and BlackBerry users and 28% of Android users plan to make the purchase. “Apple is currently the clear leader in terms of compelling user experience and customer loyalty, and we feel that their quality and pace of innovation when it comes to mobile devices will continue to improve the content and advertising experience for consumers for iPhone 5 and beyond,” InMobi vice president of global research and marketing James Lamberti said. Read on for the full press release.

Tweaked iPhone 4, white iPod touch rumors reinforced by Apple inventory leak

SKUs for a revised iPhone 4, believed to be the iPhone 4S, and new iPod touch SKUs have surfaced in Apple’s inventory system, 9to5Mac reported on Wednesday. The iPhone 4 SKUs reinforce rumors that Apple will introduce a watered-down version of the device, perhaps with just 8GB of memory, as the budget-friendly “iPhone 4S.” The listings also lend credence to early analyst reports that suggested Apple will not make any hardware changes to the iPod touch. Apple may instead only introduce a white version of the popular media player. According to 9to5Mac, Apple lists a new “N90A” codename in its system, which likely represents a small upgrade from the original iPhone 4 (the N90). The two SKUs for the phone may represent white and black 8GB models. The iPhone 5 has not yet popped up in the inventory, it seems. Additionally, 9to5Mac reported Apple is now listing three new iPod touch models with the codename “N81A.” The SKUs are expected to represent white versions of the current 8GB, 32GB and 64GB models. Apple will unveil its latest iPhone devices, and likely the white iPod touch, during its press conference on October 4th. BGR will be reporting all of the Apple news as it breaks.

Amazon Kindle and Kindle touch hands-on!

We just spent a few minutes checking out the brand new Amazon Kindle Touch and all new Amazon Kindle, and we’re impressed. Both tablets were extremely light, though with the touch sensitivity being incredible on the Kindle touch, we could see ourselves opting for that with 3G over the regular Kindle. The backs of both are metal, like the previous Kindle, and the readability is fantastic on the E Ink displays, even with the touch capability on the Kindle touch. While the prices of both are insanely attractive, Amazon revealed to us that these prices are for the special offers versions of the Kindle devices, and that the non-special offer Kindles will be $109 and $139, respectively. Even still, the prices that Amazon is delivering these products for is incredible, and the new Nook just got a whole lot less attractive. Hit the gallery for all of our photos.
