AT&T to begin throttling top 5% of unlimited data users

ATT Throttle

If you are one of the lucky AT&T users who were able to lock into that awesome unlimited data plan before they changed over to their tiered structure — and also happen to use more data than AT&T thinks is reasonable under that plan — be prepared for some potentially slower speeds. AT&T has announced that starting Oct. 1, it is going to begin to throttle the top 5 percent of the data consumers, stating that they are using on average 12 times as much data as other customers. Keep in mind, nothing to freak out over here, but if you are one of those who stream all day, and tether all night, be prepared to notice some slower speeds in the coming months.

Developers fuming over missing app comments; Google says it’s looking into it

Android Central App

We’ve been watching what’s become a bit of a thing the past several days in the Android Market. Developers have seen a significant number of comments disappear from their app listings — hundreds, at times. And for developers, app ratings and comments are lifeblood. While we don’t think anyone would complain if the one-star trolling comments (you know who you are) would disappear, five-star comments have been caught up in the purge as well.

Sprint Motorola Photon 4G available today

Sprint Motorola Photon 4G

Today’s the day, folks. The Motorola Photon 4G is now available in Sprint stores and online. And if you couldn’t tell from Part 1 of our Photon 4G review, we’re slightly over the moon about this one. Between the 4.3-inch touchscreen (Pentile display notwithstanding), dual-core 1GHz processor and that it’s running Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread, plays Netflix out of the box — and has Sprint’s Wimax data — it’s quickly found itself as our new favorite on Sprint.

Samsung profit falls 18% in Q2; company to stop reporting smartphone, tablet shipments

Samsung on Friday reported earnings for the second quarter of 2011 that showed a significant decline in profit despite modest revenue gains. Samsung’s revenue ticked up 4% year-over year to 39.44 trillion Korean won but its consolidated net income of 3.51 trillion won was a sharp 18% decline from the same quarter in 2010. The company’s semiconductor business recorded revenues of 1.79 trillion won in the second quarter, which was up sequentially from the 1.64 billion won but down from 2.94 billion won in the second quarter last year. Samsung’s LCD panel division was hit the hardest, registering an operating loss of 210 billion won on revenue of 7.09 trillion won, which was down 9% year-over-year. Samsung’s telecommunications business grossed 12.18 trillion won in the June quarter, and profit came in at 1.67 trillion won. “Despite the challenging business environment and global economic uncertainties, we achieved continued year-on-year revenue growth in the second quarter driven by mobile device sales, particularly the success of our smartphones,” said Robert Yi, Vice President and Head of Samsung Electronics’ Investor Relations Team, in a state. “Heading into the third quarter – which typically sees increased consumer demand for electronics – we expect competition to remain tight, and will continue to enhance our cost competitiveness and technology leadership in the components businesses.” Samsung stated that it will no longer report smartphone or tablet shipment figures in its earnings reports. Market analysis firm Strategy Analytics puts the company’s smartphone shipments at an impressive 19.2 million units last quarter, which would secure it a No. 2 spot globally behind Apple. The company’s full press release follows below.

Hulu sued for patent infringement

A firm named Rovi Corp has filed a complaint with the U.S. District court of Delaware alleging that Hulu infringes on one of its patents. Rovi Corp is not often in the headlines but its client list sports names of big hitter tech firms. Reuters said that Rovi licenses technology to Apple, Comcast and Microsoft and is even used to support the back-end of BlockBuster’s On Demand service and Best Buy’s CinemaNow. Hulu was put up for sale on June 24th and a number of companies are rumored to have been considering a bid on the streaming media company, including Apple. Hulu has yet to comment on the lawsuit.
